Finalize Your Goal Statement

Write out your goal statement in full.  Some will be a short one liner.  Others may be a little longer.  What is most important is that your goal meets all the requirements of being a goal, not a wish or a fuzzy notion of something you would like to happen.

Check the statement to make sure it is

  • Conceivable
  • Believable
  • Achievable
  • Stated with No Alternatives
  • Controllable
  • Measurable
  • Growth facilitating (Beneficial)

A goal statement should be clear and concise.  In other words, you shouldn’t need a Philadelphia lawyer to figure out the contingencies, etc.

If your goal is to pay off your credit card debt, your statement should include the amount of the debt, the time frame set for the goal and a monthly or weekly activity that will lead to the successful completion of the goal.

Take a little time now to put in the steps that may be missing.  Lay out your plan.  Write down what you may need to do to accomplish this goal.  You may have to stretch to accomplish your goal.  That is expected.  Let’s face it, if achieving success in reaching your goal did not require a little stretching and discipline, you wouldn’t have the debt in the first place.

You have spent time refining your goal statement.  Now, get into action.  The starting bell just rang.
