Environment: Shop During the Slow Hours
This is a temporary fix to spending, especially during the holidays. Many of us love to get out into the thick of holiday shopping. We love the crowds and the excitement generated by the music and the sales. It’s the excitement that makes us lose sense of our spending limits, especially if you have a credit card in your pocket.
Enjoy the crowds. But, window shop. Take your time. This year, more than any year in recent history, there are going to be sales and more sales. On your first outing, window shop. Look around and see what is available and check the prices.
The psychological effects of being in a crowd of people, all grabbing for the hot items can be damaging to your family budget and financial objectives. Use discipline. Before you go to the mall, know exactly how much you can afford to spend. Set a limit for each person on your holiday list. Stick to it.
Most importantly is to wait until a weekday to shop when possible. Stores and sales people are aware that excitement causes many of us to buy things we ordinarily could pass by. Understand that the holiday season is designed to get you to spend money.
- Determine how much you can afford to spend for gifts.
- Make a list of those to whom you will give a gift.
- Decide how much you will spend on each person.
- Decide what you will give the person.
- Take the list with you to the store.
- Take cash with you.
- DO NOT take your credit card.
- Shop during the quieter hours so you don’t feel rushed when making decisions.
Most of us will spend more than we intend. But, if you leave the credit card at home, chances are you won’t spend too much over your pre-set limits.
And, remember, when you are out of money, that’s it! Shopping is over.
