Be Accountable

As we prepare for the new year, it is time to take control of your life.  Learn to be accountable.  This goes back to “have the courage to face the truth.”  With two weeks remaining before the beginning of a new year, you have time to develop a habit, a good habit.  Force yourself to be responsible for your life.  Learn to be accountable.

What exactly does this mean for your life?  It means that you will live a life of truth.  This doesn’t mean that life will always be easy or that you will never be confronted with difficult choices.  It does create a simplicity.  Needless to say, it will be more difficult in the beginning to hold yourself accountable for your own life, to accept responsibility.  However, over time you will find that you are living and thriving, even in the most difficult of times.

The first step in being accountable is to stop playing the blame game.  We all have a tendency to try to blame others for our misfortunes.  We can blame the credit card banks for our credit card debt.  Not doubt, they made it too easy for most of us to get into debt and they even printed their terms in such small fonts and such vague language that litigation continues where their terms are concerned.  And, yes, hopefully in the coming year Congress will create a Bill of Rights for credit card consumers.  But, in the end you and you alone are responsible for using the credit card to purchase items you really could not afford.  A little harsh reality, huh?  Well, have the courage to face the truth.

That is one example among many we could discuss.  However, the point is not who is to blame for your present situation.  That is a total waste of time.  Now is the time to develop the habit of holding yourself accountable for the bad as well as the good.  Don’t point fingers.  Don’t blame your wife or your husband.  Look in the mirror.  Even when another makes a bad judgment call, you have the right and the responsibility to voice your opinion and to take a stand that you can live with, happily.

No one said that creating our lives and our realities as we would have them would be easy.  During the next two weeks as we approach that magic day, New Year’s Day, that gives us all the hope of new beginnings, I would only suggest that you learn to be accountable for your life and take control of your actions.  Set your goals if you have not.  Prepare a family budget.  Practice self-discipline and develop the habit of success.

Learn to visualize your life as the one you wish to have.  Visualize yourself debt free.  Visualize a savings account with a full year’s income filling it out.  Visualize yourself being honest with yourself and others.  Visualize yourself on a path to success where your focus is solely on recreating your life as the life you wish to have.  Visualize each step in accomplishing your personal, professional and financial goals.  Visualize time with your family.  Visualize everything positive in your life.

And, have the courage to face the truth.  You can accomplish your goals, your real goals if you learn to hold yourself accountable for your actions.  It’s a tough task, but the rewards are endless.  And, don’t forget that the journey is often as rewarding as the destination.
